In order to carry out the spirit of "National Conference on Undergraduate Education in New Era" and strengthen the construction of geographic science majors in institutions of higher learning under the Ministry of Education, the 2020 Meeting of the Teaching Steering Committee for Higher Education Majors in Geographic Sciences of the Ministry of Education, the 2020 Meeting of the Geography Evaluation Group under the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council and the National Forum for Deans of Geographic Sciences were held in Lanzhou University from September 25 to 27. Professor Ma Xiaojie, party secretary of Lanzhou University, Professor Pan Baotian, vice president of Lanzhou University, Academician Chen Fahu, president of the Geographical Society of China, Professor Shi Peijun, convenor of the Geography Assessment Group of academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, Professor He Canfei, director of the Committee, as well as all the members of the Teaching Steering Committee of geography Majors in higher education institutions of the Ministry of Education, all members of the Geographical Education Committee of the Geographical Society of China, and the deans of the College of Geography and the relevant faculty representatives of the national institutions of higher learning, a total of more than 300 people attended the meeting. The opening ceremony was presided over by Professor Gou Xiaohua, dean of the College of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Lanzhou University.

Ma Xiaojie extended a warm welcome to the guests at the opening ceremony and thanked all the experts and scholars for their support to the development of the geography of Lanzhou University. He introduced the characteristics of the development of geography in Lanzhou University and the important work of geography focusing on the frontier of world science and technology, national development strategy, and regional economic and social development in recent years. Chen Fahu introduced the running of geography in colleges and universities in China in detail. Shi Peijun and He Canfei expressed their congratulations on the opening of the meeting and their gratitude to the organizers.

The morning conference report was chaired by Professor Lu Huayu and Professor Liu Yaolin.In Chen Fahu’s report entitled "Denisovans and the Rise of Homo sapiens in East Asia", he summarized the background of human evolution, then focused on the history of prehistoric human activities on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, and introduced the relevant work and recent progress of the environmental archaeology team of Lanzhou University on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau in recent years. Professor Song Changqing, executive director of the Department of Geographic Science of Beijing Normal University, made a report on "Thinking on the construction of knowledge system of Undergraduate geography talents training", introducing what kind of geography talents should be cultivated in modern society. Gou Xiaohua made a report entitled "Practice and Thinking of building the first-class specialty of Physical Geography", which introduced the establishment and development process of Geography of Lanzhou University, talent training mode, and the goal and measures of creating a first-class process of geography. Tang Guoan, professor of Nanjing Normal University, gave a report entitled "Some problems in the construction of the first-class major of geographic information Science", introduced the survey results of the construction of GIS major in China, and introduced the thinking of NanJing Normal University on the curriculum construction of GIS major in detail. Professor Wu Zhifeng, dean of The School of Geographic Science and Remote Sensing of Guangzhou University, made a report on "Exploration and Reflection of online teaching of the elective course The History of Geographical Thought", and shared the online teaching experience of the History of Geographical Thought of Guangzhou University. Professor Liu Yu, secretary-general of the geography Science Teaching Steering Committee of higher education of the Ministry of Education, made a report on "Construction of virtual Simulation teaching experiment platform", introducing the importance, necessity, and application progress of virtual simulation experiment teaching. He also introduces the construction and operation of the virtual simulation teaching experiment center of Earth Science of Peking University and put forward the idea and development plan of the construction of the virtual simulation teaching alliance of geography.

The keynote report in the afternoon was chaired by Pan Baotian. Shi Peijun made a report entitled "Some problems of improving the training quality of Graduate students in Geography", introduced the training quality and employment of graduate students in geography in recent years, and put forward some relevant problems. Professor Zheng Xiangmin of East China Normal University gave a report entitled "Ideological and political Elements and Practice of Geography course", which introduced the successful experience and practical experience of combining geography with ideological and political education in detail. He Canfei made a report on "the New Round of Subject Evaluation and Development of Geography", and introduced in detail the index system structure and other related issues of the fifth round of subject evaluation of geography. Pan Baotian made a report entitled "Current situation of geomorphology research and Geomorphology teaching in China", and introduced the three development stages of geomorphology in detail, as well as the problems existing in Chinese geomorphology compared with foreign countries.

The discussion after the meeting was hosted by He Canfei, which mainly focuses on the construction of a first-class major and "golden course" of geography, the construction of virtual simulation experiment teaching project and experimental course teaching, the construction of an online open course of geography and the innovation of teaching mode, the integrated education of undergraduate and graduate students in geography, and the construction of geography study site. Deans and representatives from all over the country had in-depth exchanges on the above topics. Deans of several colleges, including Ningxia University, Jiangxi Normal University, Shandong Normal University, Ningbo University, and Qinghai Normal University, introduced the situation of their colleges and put forward their own opinions on the construction and development of geography. He Canfei, Shi Peijun, and Song Changqing made a summary speech in combination with the problems at the present stage and some suggestions on the construction of geography subject put forward by teachers at the meeting.

This meeting puts forward some thoughts and suggestions on the development of geography, which provides more scientific guidance for the future development of Geography in China.
